クリックホイールは、第2世代iPod classic（発売当時は「iPod」という名称）から入力機器として搭載されていた、「タッチホイール」の後継となる装置である。「タッチホイール」では指を滑らせるようにして操作するパッド部分と、押して操作するボタン部分が別になっていたが、クリックホイールではパット部分にボタンが内蔵される形となった。

内蔵のタッチパッドは、センサーに指が触れることによりコンデンサが構成され、指がタッチパッド上のどの位置に存在するかを微弱な静電容量の変化として検出し、センサーの表面をなぞった指の軌跡によって、操作をiPod上に反映させるようになっている。このように、操作の検出に微弱な電気を利用するため、手袋をしたままの状態や一部のタッチペンなどでは正しく操作できない場合がある。

また、上下左右と中央のボタンは、タッチパッドのセンサーによって押している操作を検出しているのではなく、物理的に金属の接点を接触させることによって操作を検出するものとなっている。

iPod mini
全てのモデルに搭載されていた。

iPod classic
第4世代から新しく搭載され、その後は最終モデルである第6.5世代(Late 2009)まで引き続いて搭載されていた。

iPod nano
iPod nanoが、iPod miniの後継製品であるため、第1世代から引き続いて搭載されてきたが、第6世代以降は「マルチタッチディスプレイ」を主な入力機器として採用し、クリックホイールは搭載されていない。

iPod touchはクリックホイール開発後に発売されたものの、電話機能のないiPhoneという設計コンセプトであり、iPhoneはクリックホイールを搭載していない。iPod shuffleはクリックホイールと似たような入力機器が搭載されているが、スクロールでの操作はできないためクリックホイールとは別のものである。

Nokia 7280

Nokia 7380
GSM携帯電話。Nokiaは、スピナー・ホイールと呼んでいた。クリックホイールとは構造がことなるが、ほぼ、同じ働きを持つ。
