^ サン＝サーンスは著書『Musical Memories』に次のように書いている。「巧みに構成された単純な和音の進行、その並びだけでも美しいものに純粋な喜びを感じない者は、真に音楽を好んではいないのだ [184]。」
^ この楽曲が史上初の映画のための作品として引き合いに出されることがあるが [187]、先立つ例がいくつか存在する。無声映画のために書かれた最初のオリジナル管弦楽曲として知られるのが、1904年にパテが配給した『マリー・アントワネット』のためにハーマン・フィンクが作曲した音楽で、奏者40名以上のオーケストラのために書かれた楽曲だった [188]。当時の『アンコール』誌は、映画に音楽を提供するにあたりフィンクが「調和のとれた筆致」を持っていると評している [189]。他にも『Soldiers of the Cross』（1900年、作曲者不明）がある [190]。
