 オーストリア帝国の衰勢

1848年革命はヨーロッパ中に波及し、ウィーンでも暴動が起こるなど混乱の中、フェルディナント1世の後を甥の若き皇帝フランツ・ヨーゼフ1世が継いだ。しかし、すでに帝国は衰退傾向にあった。

1853年、不凍港獲得を目指すロシア帝国は、オスマン帝国との間に戦端を開く（クリミア戦争）。これに対し、バルカン半島におけるロシアの影響力増大を恐れたオーストリアは、オスマン帝国を支持した。このため、ウィーン体制の成立以来友好を保っていたロシアとの関係が悪化した。これは神聖同盟の完全な崩壊を意味し、ロシアの後押しを失ったオーストリアは、ドイツ連邦内における地位を低下させた。
