注釈^ オーバレンド・ガーニー商会破綻による取り付け騒ぎの流れはイギリス全土に波及し、一時はロンドン中の銀行のうち半分が潰れると噂された。実際は、各種投資事業の停止や失業率の増大を招いた。
^ ただし、バジョットの『最後の貸し手』理論は当時の世論や金融界からは非難を浴びており、例えばイングランド銀行理事であるトムソン・ハンキー（英語版）は「...(彼の理論は)この国の金融界にもたらされた最も有害な原理である。イングランド銀行が放漫な銀行の求めに応じて、いつでも資金を供給する役割を負うなどといった考えは間違っている。」と言って彼を批判したことからも、すぐに理論が受け入れられた訳でないことが理解できよう。
