^ 1699年、諸経費が積み重なり渡海出来ないほど財産がほとんどなかったペンは、アメリカ再上陸前にイングランドで自分の代理人だったフォードに2800ポンドの借金をして証文に判を押した。内容はペンシルベニアをフォードへ売却したことになっていて、これがフォード一族とのトラブルとなったが、ペンから大金を詐取したフォードの陰謀である見方と、ペンの金銭感覚の無さが招いた自業自得だとする2つの見方がある。ヴァイニング、P275 - P276、P297 - P298、岩井、P226、P232。
