注釈^ ただし、その前身とも言えるヘンライコポリス大学 (College of Henricopolis) はバージニア会社によって1618年に創立され、ハーバード大学の1636年よりもさかのぼる。ただし、この大学は1622年のジェームズタウンの虐殺で破壊され、開学中に大学レベルの高等教育が施されることは一度もなかった。ウィリアム・アンド・メアリー大学のWren Buildingには、この大学の起源はそのヘンライコ大学構想にあると記された銘板がある。
