^ ロシア語について。メルケルは、東ドイツ出身なのでソ連の共産党のやりくちというものがどういうものなのか、KGBのやりくちというものがどれほど汚いものか、というものもよく知っていたわけであるが、（もともとKGBで、ソ連内の人々を監視する諜報員で、まさに東ドイツの人々を監視・抑圧する側の人間そのものであった）ウラジーミル・プーチンの手の内を読み、プーチンとかけひきするうえで、メルケルがロシア語が得意だということも有利に作用した。通訳を介さなくても、プーチンが側近と（小声などで、こそっと）交わしている言葉もそのまま理解できるし、プーチンが国内向けにした発言の微妙なニュアンスなども理解できるからである。
^ 当時の大学は5年制で学士号や修士号のような制度はなかったが、対外的には修士号相当とされていた。
^ なお、この時には次回大会開催国の元首としてブラジル入りしていたロシアのプーチン大統領とウクライナ情勢について首脳会談を行っており、外交も行っている[40]。
