注釈^ 「Act for establishing and organizing a Marine Corps」という法律が1798年7月11日に連邦議会で可決されている。
^ 海兵隊総司令官 (Commandant of the Marine Corps) は、陸軍参謀総長、海軍作戦部長、空軍参謀総長たちとの間で指揮命令系統の上下関係はない。米大統領の下で戦略の立案といった軍事顧問の役を務める統合参謀本部 (Joint Chiefs of Staff) の長である統合参謀本部議長も、長年、海兵隊出身者からは出なかったので四軍の中で海兵隊だけが格下である印象を持たれていたが、2005年にピーター・ペース海兵隊大将 (Gen. Peter Pace) が第16代統合参謀本部議長に就任したことで、四軍が並列の関係とみなされるようになった。
^ 自らの組織を生き物だと捉えるアメリカ海兵隊では、毎年11月10日になるとバースデーケーキで誕生日を祝う。

^ 従来は特定の海兵遠征隊 (MEU) のみが特殊作戦能力 (Special Operations Capable) を有していたのでその海兵遠征隊だけを特に "MEU (SOC)" と呼んだが、今ではすべての海兵遠征隊が特殊作戦能力を有しているので MEU (SOC) とは呼ばれなくなった。
^ 米海兵隊の人数は、2008年夏時点で19万5000名ほどである。また、米海兵隊は将校の割合が他の軍種と比べ低く、米陸軍16 %、米海軍18 %、米空軍20 %に比べて、約10 %である。

^ 2002年5月に、当時の海兵隊司令官ジェームズ.L.ジョーンズ大将によって一等軍曹 (E-7) に名誉昇進した。アメリカ海兵隊の歴史上退役者が昇進したのはR・リー・アーメイが初めてである。
^ 兵卒として入隊したが選抜されて士官へ昇進した（最終階級は大尉）。
