鵬、鳳（ほう/おおとり、Peng）は、中国に伝わる伝説の鳥。その体の大きさから、大鵬/大鳳（たいほう、Dapeng）とも呼ばれる。
文献での言及

『荘子』逍遥遊篇では、鵬が次のように描かれている。北の果てにある海に棲む「鯤（こん）」と呼ばれる体が数千里にも及ぶ巨大な魚が、これもまた背が数千里にも及ぶ巨大な鳥「鵬」と化す。鵬は天を覆う雲のような翼を広げ、荒れ狂う嵐に乗って、南の果ての海すなわち天の池へと向かう。そのときには、九万里（古代中語の一里は約400m。この場合は遥か彼方までという意であろう）上空まで飛び上がって舞う。

清代の小説『続子不語』によれば、鵬の羽根は10戸以上の家の上を覆いつくすほどで、この巨大な羽や糞が家を壊し、人命を奪うことすらあるという。日食は鵬が上空を通過するために起こるという説もある。こうした鵬の姿は、熱帯のモンスーンを象徴化、神話化したものとも見られている[1]。

鵬は、『西遊記』や『封神演義』など、数々の中国小説にも登場している。西遊記に登場する雲程万里鵬は、「一飛び」で九万里を飛ぶという。

鵬程万里 - 『荘子』の寓話から、遠い道程や前途が遠大であることを鵬の飛ぶ距離に例えた言葉[2]。

日本における使用例

1879年には日本の愛知県安城市三河安城で、全長8尺（約2.4メートル）、片翼のみで9尺5寸（約2.9メートル）もある巨大な鳥が撃ち落とされ、当時の『安都満新聞』で鵬の捕獲例として報道されたことがあるが、この正体はアホウドリとする説もある[3]。

その壮大なイメージから、大鵬は力士の四股名（大鵬幸喜、白鵬翔）としても用いられる。

兵庫県立神戸高等学校の男子用副校章は鵬をあしらっている。また旧制中学時代より学生のことを「鵬雛(ほうすう)」と呼び、前述の故事に準え、将来大きな羽を広げて様々な分野で活躍する人材の育成を目指している。

青森県立弘前高等学校の校章は鵬の意匠である。
