飛騨市 あるいは 飛?市（ひだし）は、岐阜県の最北端に位置する市。飛騨市中心部神岡城より望む神岡の町並み
概要

2004年（平成16年）2月1日、平成の大合併により吉城郡古川町・神岡町・河合村・宮川村が合併して飛騨市が誕生した[1]。飛騨市が発足がしたときの人口は約3万人。飛?市役所は旧古川町役場に置かれている。
自治体名称「飛騨市」「飛?市」について

2004年に自治体として発足する際に総務省が公告した名称は「飛?市」（「?」の旁部が「單」=〈上部にロふたつ、「単」の旧字体〉）である[1]が、通常は「飛騨市」（「騨」の旁部が「単」、「?」の俗字）を使用しても差し支えないものとし[2]、市の公式表記では「飛?市」を用い、通常時は「飛?市」「飛騨市」どちらの字体の使用も認められている。なお本項では原則として「飛騨市」を用いるが、市設置の施設・組織名等では「飛?市」の表記を用いる。

位置

飛騨高地の北部に位置する。地勢的には、神通川水系高原川流域にあたる東部と、同水系宮川流域にあたる西部に分かれ、両者の間を山地が分かつ。宮川沿いの盆地と、高原川沿いの河岸段丘に人口が密集する。

面積の大半は山林である。市の境界と内部に標高1,000メートル以上の山々が数多く連なる。飛騨山脈にかかる北東端だけが2,000メートルを越える。
