長崎市（ながさきし）は、長崎県の南西部に位置する市。長崎県の県庁所在地および人口が最多の市であり、中核市に指定されている。九州地方で第7位の人口を有する。
概要長崎市中心部周辺の空中写真。
2010年5月8日撮影の45枚を合成作成。国土交通省 国土地理院 地図・空中写真閲覧サービスの空中写真を基に作成。
「鎖国」体制であった江戸時代には、国内唯一の江戸幕府公認の国際貿易港（対オランダ、対中国）・出島を持つ港町であった。幕末期も、長崎港は日米修好通称条約の開港場に指定された。このため、出島跡を初めとして、旧居留地や長崎新地中華街など、異国情緒に満ちた港町として有名である。また、三菱重工業長崎造船所は三菱重工業発祥の地でもあり[2]、日本の工業化を支えた港湾都市であった。歴史的経緯からカトリック教徒の数が比較的多いことでも知られており、特にカトリック教会は長崎県単独で一つの大司教区を形成している（日本の大司教区は長崎含め3つあり、東京大司教区は東京・千葉で、大阪大司教区は大阪・兵庫・和歌山で構成）。
実戦で使用された核兵器（原子爆弾）としては、広島市に次ぐ世界史上2番目の、そして最後の被爆都市としても知られる。「近隣の核武装国による核攻撃を想定するのは、他国に誤解を与える」との信念の下で、全国自治体の中では唯一、国民保護計画案から、他国より核攻撃される事態の想定をあえて削除している（2007年5月11日田上富久市長発言）。なお、長崎県は計画案の中で核攻撃への対処事項を記述している。 長崎市の人口は、国勢調査では1920年の第1回調査で横浜市に次ぐ全国7位、九州1位だった。しかし、相対的地位は低下する一方で1930年の第3回調査で福岡市、1940年の第5回調査で八幡市（現在の北九州市八幡東区および八幡西区。のちに長崎市が抜き返すが、1963年に北九州市を発足させ再度逆転）、1947年の第6回調査で熊本市、1975年の第12回調査で鹿児島市、2000年の第17回調査で大分市にそれぞれ抜かれて九州6位になった。 推計人口は2022年7月1日に40万人を割り込み、同年8月1日には宮崎市に抜かれて九州7位になっている。特例市である佐賀市を除けば九州地方の県庁所在地である中核市では最も人口が少ない。 現在でも人口減少が著しく、2020年の第21回調査では前回より藤沢市、豊田市、高松市、富山市に抜かれて、全国44位になっている。
