長岡市（ながおかし）は、新潟県の中南部（中越地方）に位置する市。県内では新潟市に次いで第2位の人口を持ち、中越地方では最多の人口を有する。施行時特例市に指定されており、長岡まつり大花火大会で知られている。1906年（明治39年）に市制施行。
概要長岡市の中心市街地（大手通り）

新潟県の中越地方の中心都市であり、長岡都市圏を形成している。

長岡市の中央部は信濃川により形成された沖積平野に位置し[1]、江戸時代には長岡藩の城下町として栄えた[2]。

戊辰戦争と第二次世界大戦（長岡空襲）の二度にわたって市の中心部は壊滅的被害を受けるが、共に不撓不屈の精神により復興を遂げ、現在に至る。それに因み、市の紋章は不死鳥をイメージして、「長」の文字を図案化したものになっている[3]。

かつての古志郡や三島郡の大部分を占める他、蒲原郡・魚沼郡・刈羽郡の一部にも跨る市域をもつ。

位置

越後平野が広がりはじめる南部に位置し、新潟市の新潟県庁までは約60 kmの距離にある[注 1]。新潟市までは上越新幹線では約20分強[4]、在来線では特急で約50分、普通列車で約75分、自動車では約60分[注 2]で移動できる。

上越新幹線で東京から約80 - 100分、関越自動車道で東京から約3時間の位置にあり、経済面など関東地方との結びつきが強い。
地形

南北に日本最長の大河である信濃川が縦断し、信濃川の両岸に広がる沖積平野を中心に市街地が発展している。

東西には東山連峰と西山丘陵地がそれぞれ連なる。市の東部にあたる山古志地域や栃尾地域の一部は山間地の急傾斜地帯を形成し、さらに栃尾地域の南東方面には越後山脈の守門岳がそびえる[1]。
