酒田市（さかたし）は、山形県の北西に位置する庄内北部の都市である。市の人口は約9万5千人で、県内人口第3位の地方自治体である。
概要

山形県唯一の重要港湾である酒田港と庄内空港があり、日本海と鳥海山の自然に恵まれ、庄内平野で育った良質な庄内米と鳥海山の伏流水で造られる日本酒が特産品である。中細ちぢれ麺と魚介系スープが特徴の酒田のラーメンや酒田港で水揚げされる海の幸などを求めに来る観光客も少なくはない。
歴史

平安時代に朝廷が出羽国の国府として築いたとされる城輪柵跡があるように、地域の歴史は古い。酒田の街は袖の浦（現在の酒田市宮野浦）に移り住んだ奥州藤原氏の家臣36人が、1521年頃に最上川の対岸に移り、砂浜を開拓し作ったと言われている。
