還暦（かんれき）とは、干支（十干十二支）が一巡し誕生年の干支に還ること。誕生年に60を加えた年つまり数え61歳（≒満60歳）。人の年齢を表す場合が多い。華甲（かこう）、本卦還り（ほんけがえり）とも表現する。

年齢は昭和30年（1955年）過ぎまで「数え何歳」と表現されていた。数え年において年齢を加算する元日は太陰太陽暦1月1日 (旧暦)であるが、昭和30年当時でも西暦の元日に「年を一つ重ねる｣ことが定着しつつあったからか現在では還暦・古稀など賀寿を太陽暦に基づく数え方をする人が多い。1950年（昭和25年）1月1日施行の年齢のとなえ方に関する法律に基づいて、数え年より満年齢を用いることが多い現在では、還暦祝いを満60歳誕生日頃に行うことが多い。

因みに数え31歳を半還暦（はんかんれき）・数え121歳を大還暦（だいかんれき）と表現する。
日本における還暦祝い

魔除けのため赤色産着が以前は使われていたので日本における還暦祝いでは「出生時に還る」という意味で赤色の衣服（頭巾やちゃんちゃんこなど）を本人に贈る場合がある。

還暦を機に現役を引退する例も多く、満60歳を定年とする企業も多いが2000年以降は満65歳定年の企業も増えつつある。


還暦式 - 成人式のように還暦を第二の人生の出発として祝う「還暦式」と呼ばれるものが行われ始めた。2007年10月民間主導の佐世保市[1]、地方公共団体が催した2005年11月の壱岐市[2]や2008年10月の市川市[3]などがその始まりである。

プロレスは選手寿命が長いので現役中に還暦を迎える場合があり、ジャイアント馬場・ラッシャー木村などが「還暦記念試合」を行っている。試合日は満60歳の誕生日頃が多い。

西洋での60年祭

西洋では、ダイヤモンドを60周年の祝いに贈ったり、60周年の象徴とする風習がある。結婚60周年はダイヤモンド婚式ともいい、ことにヴィクトリア女王の即位60周年は、ダイヤモンド・ジュビリーとして盛大に祝賀された。
