身請（みうけ）は、芸娼妓などの身の代金（前借り金）を支払い、約束の年季があけるまえに、稼業をやめさせることである。身請ののち、自分の妻、また妾にすることもある。落籍ともいう。

江戸時代の遊女の身請は、ふつうまず客からだれだれを身請すると楼主に相談し、楼主は親元に異存のないことをたしかめたうえ、客に抱女の身代金と本人の借金とを支払わせ、身代金を償わせる。遊女の負債のほかに償う身代金は江戸時代の梅茶女郎でも40両から50両、松の位（くらい）の太夫となれば1000両もとられる。天明ころの江戸新吉原の松葉半左衛門は26年間に二代目から五代目までの瀬川4人を身請され、5000両余りの金銭を得て富豪になったとつたえられる。かつては500両から600両くらいで借金済から身請祝の雑費をあわせても1000両が限度であったのが、天明3年秋に請け出された四代目瀬川の身代金だけで1500両であったといい、ために不当な身代金の弊害が憂えられ、寛政から身請料金500両以内と制限された。習慣として身請する者は貰主の名において身請証文を遊女屋に差入れる。たとえば元禄13年の薄雲身請の証文を以下に引用する。証文之事。一、其方抱之薄雲と申す傾城、未年季之内に御座候へ共、我等妻に致度、色々申候所に無（二）相違（一）妻に被（レ）下、其上衣類夜著蒲団手道具長持迄相添被（レ）下忝存候、則為（二）樽代（一）金子三百五拾両其方え進申候。自今已後、御公儀様より御法度被（レ）為（二）仰付（一）候、江戸御町中、ばいた遊女出合御座舗者不（レ）及（レ）申道中茶屋はたごやへ、左様成遊女がましき所に指置申間敷候、若左様之遊女所に指置申候と申すもの御座候はば、御公儀様え被（レ）上（レ）仰、何様とも御懸り可（レ）被（レ）成候、其時一言之義申間敷候、右之薄雲若離別致し候はば、金子百両に家屋舗相添へ、隙出し可（レ）申候。為（二）後日（一）証文如（レ）件。元禄十三年辰の七月三日、貰主源六、請人平右衛門、同半四郎、四郎左右衛門殿（「（一）」「（二）」「（レ）」は返り点）

元禄3年の三浦屋初菊の身請証文、寛保元年の十代目高尾の身請証文もだいたいおなじで、身請証文には遊女の手切れ金にまで言及されていた。遊女には、女衒（ぜげん）付き、女衒なしの区別があり、女衒なしの身請は容易であったが、女衒付きはあとが面倒であるとされ、身請相談とともに金銭で女衒の手を離れさせる手順をふんだ。太夫の身請は、とうぜん客は大尽であるから、楼内はもちろん、芸妓、幇間にまで赤飯、料理、祝儀の包金をあたえ、朋輩の妓女には昼夜、総仕舞（総揚げ）の玉を付け、身請の遊女は朋輩女郎、鴇婆、妓夫、若者におくられ、客の待つ引手茶屋に行き、ここで宴を張ったのち、大門口に用意された迎えの駕籠に乗り、おめでとう、ごきげんよう、の別れのことばをうけて廓を出た。赤飯と鰹節をおくられた引手茶屋の一同もここまで来て送る派手なものであった。
