警察庁次長（けいさつちょうじちょう）は、警察庁の次長たる警察官である。 警察庁長官を補佐する職として置かれている[注釈 1]。階級は警視監。俸給は指定職6号俸で、これは一部の外局の長官などと同等である。 階級と給与面でみると、警視監の階級にある警察官をもって充てる指定職6号俸の職であることから、指定職7号俸の警視総監より下位であるが、警視総監の権限は警視庁（東京都）のみに限定されているのに対して、警察庁次長の権限は警視総監を含めた全国の警察に及ぶ。何らかの理由で長官が不在であれば、次長が長官の代理として命令を出すこともあり、その命令を東京都の警察責任者である警視総監が受ける場合もある。このため、警察庁次長は警視総監に対して「階級は下だが、権限は上」と見なすこともでき、警視監の階級においては警察組織全体において序列1位である。 上記のような事情もあって、人事の実務上、警察庁次長は次の警察庁長官となるべき者のポストとして運用される[1]と共に、現職の警視総監よりも入庁年度が1年ないし数年早い者を充てることが通例とされている。これにより、警察庁次長が警察庁長官に昇格した際に、警視総監との地位の上下関係が正常に戻る。 氏名就任年月日後職
