舞鶴市（まいづるし）は、京都府北部の中丹地域に位置し、若狭湾の支湾である舞鶴湾に面する市。もと京極氏・牧野氏3万5000石の城下町。旧称、田辺。人口7万7千人。舞鶴港の東港は、かつては旧日本海軍の軍港で、舞鶴鎮守府の所在地であった。現在は海上自衛隊の基地港であり総監部（舞鶴地方隊）が置かれる。西港は、北前船の時代から現在に至るまで商港として利用されている。広島県呉市と共に肉じゃが発祥の地として知られる。
地理
地名の由来

元来この地域は「田辺」と呼ばれていたが、明治時代に山城（現・京田辺市）や紀伊（現・和歌山県田辺市）にある同名の地名との重複を避けるため、田辺城の雅称である「舞鶴城」より「舞鶴」の名称が取られた[1]。田辺城が「舞鶴城」の別名を得たのは、城型が南北に長く、東の白鳥峠から眺めるとあたかも鶴が舞っている姿のように見えるからであるとされている[2]。
地形
山地

舞鶴市の周辺は丹波高地が広がり、代表する山岳には、福井県との県境部に位置する青葉山があり、「若狭富士」の異名をもつ。市域にはほかにも宇野ヶ岳、赤岩山など600メートル級の山々が連なっている[3]。
河川

市域の大半を山林地域が占めているが、1級河川の由良川や西舞鶴の高野川、伊佐津川、東舞鶴の与保呂川、志楽川流域などでは沖積地が発達している[3][4]。
海岸

北は日本海の若狭湾に面し、その最も深く湾入したところが舞鶴湾である。リアス式海岸など景勝地に富んでおり、オオミズナギドリ繁殖地として国の天然記念物に指定されている冠島や沓島といった島々も舞鶴市に属している[5][3]。
