自治大臣（じちだいじん、英: Minister for Home Affairs）は、かつて日本の自治省の長および主任の大臣であった国務大臣である。日本語略称は自治相（じちしょう）。

前身の地方自治庁長官、自治庁長官も国務大臣をもって充てていた。また、地方財政委員会委員長には無任所大臣が就任することとなっていた。

後身は総務大臣。
概要

自治省は旧内務省の直系の官庁に当たるが、自治省の設置から総務省の設置に至るまでの期間中、自治大臣の経験者の中から内閣総理大臣は出ていない（内閣総理大臣臨時代理を除く。また、後身の総務大臣の経験者の中からは、麻生太郎、菅義偉が内閣総理大臣に就任した）。

第1次岸内閣において、前身の自治庁長官を命ぜられた田中伊三次は「内務大臣といえば副総理格が座ったもんだ。その嫡流とも言うべき役所の長を三流省庁並みの��長官�≠ﾆ呼ぶのはけしからん」と怒って、勝手に呼称を��大臣�≠ﾉ変えさせている[2]。

自治大臣は、厚生大臣、運輸大臣、建設大臣と比べてはるかに見劣りし、初入閣時に「伴食大臣」「陣笠大臣」として就任するポスト、または、元内務官僚・元自治官僚の議員のためのポストとなることが多かった。第2次中曽根内閣の自治大臣には、自民党所属ですらない、新自由クラブの田川誠一が就任している[3][4]。これは、自民党及び民社党の旧内務省系官庁出身の議員で結成された「内友会」（後藤田正晴など）が自治大臣および国家公安委員会委員長の選任に影響力を及ぼしたことや、55年体制の下、自民党が衆参両院で単独過半数の議席を確保しており、政権交代の可能性がほぼ皆無だったことなどに起因している。

警察を管理した旧内務省の流れを汲むことから、ほとんどの自治大臣が国家公安委員会委員長を兼務したが、兼務の法的義務はなかった。
