市名の由来になった總社(現在の名前:総社宮)

総社市（そうじゃし）は、岡山県の中南部にある市である。
概要

かつての吉備国の中心地域で、吉備分国後は備中国の国府が置かれ、国府が廃れた後も備中国総社宮が今に残る。総社市総社地区は備中国総社宮の鳥居前町・街道の宿場町・浅尾藩の陣屋町として栄え、総社宮を中心に町が構成されていたので通称「総社」と呼ばれていた（この頃の正式な地区名は「八部（やたべ）」）。これが今日の総社という町の名の起源。

桃太郎伝説のモデルとされる吉備津彦命と鬼神・温羅の伝説が古来より残り、温羅の居城でもある「鬼ノ城」跡がある。また、画聖・雪舟の生誕の地でも知られ、備中国分寺や大小多数の古墳など遺跡・史跡が非常に多い。

現在の総社市は2005年に初代・総社市、都窪郡山手村、清音村の1市2町が合併したに伴い、新設された2代目の市である。また総社市と倉敷市真備町（旧・吉備郡真備町）で総社圏を構成しており、ごみ処理は同圏域において行っている[1]。

かつて、同じ吉備郡だった岡山市北区足守・高松、加賀郡吉備中央町大和（旧上房郡賀陽町南部）とも繋がりは強い。人口が増加傾向にあり、7万人近くにまで増えている。岡山市のベッドタウンとして発展している。

市域を北西から南に高梁川が貫流している。北部・西部は吉備高原の南部に位置し、南部もまた丘陵地帯を形成している。市街地となっている中央部は元来、高梁川の氾濫原で小盆地を形成している。

古代 - ヤマト王権に匹敵しうる勢力として古代王国・吉備国が岡山県、広島県東半分、香川県島嶼部、兵庫県西部（讃岐などの四国も支配下にあったという説もある）をその版図としていたが、その中心地が総社にあったとされている。市内には代表的な古墳として全国10位の規模を誇る作山古墳がある。最近では、ヤマト王権は吉備から発祥したものという説もある。

国郡里制のもとでは、総社市域は賀陽郡（「かや」、賀夜など様々な表記あり）・下道郡（「しもつみち」）・窪屋郡（「くぼや」）という郡に属していた。この郡は明治中期まで続くこととなる。

白村江の戦い（663年）に敗れた大和朝廷軍は、新羅・唐連合軍の侵攻を防ぐために各所に城を築き、その一つに市内の山に鬼ノ城を築いたという説在り。（ただし鬼の城は白村江以前に作られた等、多数の説があり、その実態はいまだ解明されていない。）


奈良時代 - 備中国の国府が置かれた。総社市金井戸辺りにあったと言われている。

平安時代 - 末期、高梁川に湛井堰（たたいぜき）が作られたと伝わる[2][3][4]。（#湛井十二箇郷組合参照）
