箱館戦争（はこだてせんそう、慶応4年/明治元年〈1868年〉 - 明治2年（1869年〉）は、戊辰戦争の戦闘の一つで、新政府軍と旧幕府軍との最後の戦闘である。旧幕府軍の本拠地が現北海道函館市の五稜郭だったことから「五稜郭の戦い」とも呼ばれる。この戦争の最中に干支が戊辰から己巳に替わったことから、己巳の役（きしのえき）と呼ばれることもある。
背景

慶応4年（1868年）4月、江戸城無血開城により、戊辰戦争は北陸、東北へ舞台を移した。5月、新政府が決定した徳川家への処置は、駿河、遠江70万石への減封というものであった。これにより約8万人の幕臣を養うことは困難となり、多くの幕臣が路頭に迷うことを憂いた海軍副総裁の榎本武揚は、蝦夷地に旧幕臣を移住させ、北方の防備と開拓にあたらせようと画策する。
榎本艦隊の北行

榎本は新政府への軍艦の引渡しに応じず、4月12日、悪天候を理由に艦隊を館山沖へ移動。恭順派の勝海舟の説得で品川沖に戻り、富士山丸・観光丸・朝陽丸・翔鶴丸の4隻を新政府に引渡すが、開陽など主力艦の温存に成功した。
