概要

第48回衆議院議員総選挙で選出された衆議院議員が任期満了を迎える時期[注 1]が、内閣総理大臣・菅義偉の自由民主党総裁としての任期が終わる2021年9月30日に近かったため、同年後半になると、次期自民党総裁選挙と本総選挙の日程の兼ね合いについて様々な報道がなされた。

7月下旬には、菅内閣の支持率下落を受け、現行法制で最も遅い11月などへの総選挙の先延ばし論が与党内で強まっていると報じられた[2]。これに対し、野党の立憲民主党は任期満了後の総選挙には反対し[3]、一方で解散を伴わない任期満了による総選挙を9月中に閣議決定する案も浮上していた[4]。

しかし9月3日、菅が総裁選挙への不出馬を表明し、総選挙の日程は新首相によって決定されることとなった[5]。

9月29日、菅の後任の自民党総裁に選出された岸田文雄は、10月4日に首相に就任。
