今日では郵政選挙と言われている選挙で、与党の自由民主党・公明党が圧勝した。時の首相（自民党総裁）小泉純一郎は、郵政民営化法案が参議院で否決されれば、自分は衆議院を解散して国民の信を問うと明言していたが、その言葉通り、参議院での郵政民営化法案否決を受けて小泉は衆議院を解散した（郵政解散）。
自民党は郵政民営化法案に反対票を投じた議員の選挙区に「刺客」と呼ばれる候補を送り、大半の議員が落選した（この手法により当選した議員を俗に「小泉チルドレン」と言う）。これにより、自公両党は合わせて衆参で過半数を制することとなり、2007年（平成19年）の第21回参議院議員通常選挙までこの状態は続いた。
