ここでは文仁親王の宮家である秋篠宮家についても解説する。秋篠宮家は直宮家、筆頭宮家である。2019年（令和元年）5月1日以降、当主の文仁親王は皇位継承順位第1位の皇嗣である（皇太子と同等の待遇）[注釈 1]。
概要1990年代の秋篠宮一家
1990年（平成2年）6月29日、礼宮文仁親王と川嶋紀子との結婚を機に創設された。
宮号は、和歌の歌枕として有名な奈良市の「秋篠（あきしの）」に由来する。
なお宮号の候補には、常陸宮の宮号の由来のように、かつての親王任国である関東の令制国名（上総国、上野国）を由来とした“上総宮（かずさのみや）”、“上野宮（こうずけのみや）”などが挙がっていたともいわれている。
宮号に「秋篠」が選ばれたことで、同地が話題となった。特に、「秋篠寺の技芸天像が、文仁親王妃紀子に似ている」とも言われた[1]。
平成時代（第125代天皇明仁在位中：1989年1月7日 - 2019年4月30日）に創設された唯一の宮家であり、2021年（令和3年）現在も、最後に創設された宮家である。また、現存する宮家の中で皇位継承権を有する男子（親王・王[注釈 2]）を2名以上有する唯一の宮家であり、平成生まれの皇位継承権を有する男子を有する唯一の宮家である[注釈 3]。
2021年（令和3年）10月26日、眞子内親王が結婚し、皇籍を離脱した。
2022年5月小学館から『秋篠宮』（江森啓治著）というタイトルのインタビューに基づくノンフィクション書籍が刊行された。
2022年7月宮内庁御用掛に元警察官僚の吉田尚正が着任した。吉田は着任にあたっては山積する皇嗣家の問題に対処するために他の社外取締役などを全て辞して、専任で就任している[2]。秋篠宮家に対するSNSによる誹謗・中傷に対する宮内庁広報室による今後の対処方針については宮内庁#概説を参照のこと。
