福岡市（ふくおかし）は、福岡県西部に位置する市。福岡県の県庁所在地であり、九州地方最大の人口を有する政令指定都市でもある。
九州地方の行政・経済・交通の中心地として同地方最多の人口を有する。東京23区を除いた全国の市でも横浜市、大阪市、名古屋市、札幌市に次ぐ5番目の人口（約163万人[2]）を擁し、人口増加数・人口増加率ともに政令指定都市の中で首位（2020年国勢調査[3]）。
概要福岡市のスカイライン
博多湾に面するこの地域は古来から博多（はかた）として認識されており、大陸方面への玄関口として利用されてきた。中世に商人による自治都市が形成され、戦乱で度々焼き払われながらも、豊かな町人文化を育んだ。豊臣秀吉の手で復興されたのち、黒田氏（福岡藩）が福岡城とその城下町を築いたことで、那珂川を境に西が城下町としての「福岡」、東が中世からの商人町・商業都市としての「博多」となった[注釈 1]。その後、江戸時代から明治時代初頭にかけて、武士の街である福岡と商人の街である博多という性格の異なる2つの街は共存していたが、1876年に福岡と博多は1つの都市へと統合されて「福博（ふくはく）」となり、その後、｢福岡」と改称された[4]。
九州地方の行政・経済・交通の中心地であり同地方最大の人口を有する首位都市（プライメイトシティ）である。西日本（関西以西）においても大阪市に次ぐ人口を擁する都市である。同市を中心として福岡都市圏を形成している。県内及び九州で第2位の人口を誇る北九州市（北九州都市圏）とともに形成する北九州・福岡大都市圏は都市単位の経済規模において、三大都市圏に次ぐ日本の四大都市圏に数えられる[4]。市内総生産は特別区部である東京23区を除けば、大阪市、横浜市、名古屋市に次いで国内4位であり、福岡市は三大都市圏に次ぐ高い経済力を持った都市である[5]。
