硫黄島の戦い（いおうとうのたたかい、いおうじまのたたかい[注 1]、Battle of Iwo Jima, 1945年2月19日 - 1945年3月26日）は、第二次世界大戦末期に東京都硫黄島村に属する小笠原諸島の硫黄島において日本軍とアメリカ軍との間で行われた戦いである。アメリカ軍側の作戦名はデタッチメント作戦 (Operation Detachment)。

1944年8月時点での連合軍の戦略では、日本本土侵攻の準備段階として台湾に進攻する計画であった[10]。台湾を拠点とした後に、中国大陸あるいは沖縄のいずれかへ進撃することが予定された。台湾の攻略作戦については「コーズウェイ作戦」（土手道作戦）としてに具体的な検討が進められたが、その後に陸海軍内で議論があり、1944年10月にはアメリカ統合参謀本部が台湾攻略の計画を放棄して、小笠原諸島を攻略後に沖縄に侵攻することが決定された[11]。
