石川県（いしかわけん）は、日本の中部地方に位置する県。県庁所在地は金沢市。

本州の中央部、日本海側の北陸地方に位置する。県域は令制国の加賀国と能登国に当たる。
概要

石川県の名称は加賀地方にあった石川郡に由来し、さらに石川郡との命名は本県最大の河川手取川の古名である「石川」に由来する。1872年（明治5年）、金沢県庁が石川郡美川町（現：白山市）に移転した際、その郡名により石川県と改名された。翌年、県庁が再び金沢に移転した後も県名はそのままで現在に至っている[1]。なお、金沢も市制施行前である当時は石川郡に属していた。

形状は、東西約100km、南北約200kmと南北に細長い。県南部の加賀地方は西側に日本海の直線的な海岸線が続き、東側に両白山地の山々が連なる。南東部には県内で最高峰の白山（2,702m）がそびえる。県北部の能登地方は日本海に向かって北東方向に突き出た半島（能登半島）となっている。このため県全体の海岸線の総延長は約580kmに及ぶ[2]。これはJR東海道本線の東京駅・神戸駅間（589.5 km）に相当する距離である。

気候は日本海側気候型である。西寄りの風が日本海を流れる対馬暖流の上で水蒸気を蓄えて雷雲となり、両白山地に当たって降水をもたらすことが多い[3]。都道府県別の年間降水量は5番目に多い[4]。特に冬は北西からの季節風が続くため降水量が多く、山間部は豪雪地帯となっている[5]。降雪時に雷鳴を伴うことが多く[3]、この現象は鰤（ブリ）が獲れる時期と重なることからブリ起こしと呼ばれている[6][7]。

県民人口は約110万人。都市別では金沢市が最多の約46万人と約40%を占める。次いで多いところは白山市と小松市のそれぞれ約11万人であり、金沢市を中心に県南部の加賀地方に人口が偏在している[8]。金沢市の人口は、北陸地方では新潟市に次いで2番目（北陸3県に限れば 1番目）であり、北陸経済の中心地の一つとなっている。

2020年（令和2年）の従業者数約59.6万人のうち約69.6%が第三次産業に、約27.8%が第二次産業に従事している[9]。特徴としては、第二次産業の中では製造業の割合が高く、また製造業の中でも従業者の過半数が一般機械や電気機械などの機械関連で働いていることが挙げられる[10]。
