目黒区（めぐろく）は、東京都の区部南西部に位置する特別区[1]。
地理

東京23区の南西部、武蔵野台地の南東部に位置する。目黒川と呑川が形成する谷とその支谷が台地を刻んでおり、標高5m未満から35m以上まで起伏に富んだ坂が多いことが特徴である[2]。

面積は1,470haであり、これは東京23区中で16番目となる[2]。
隣接する自治体・行政区

次の特別区に囲まれている。渋谷区・世田谷区・品川区・大田区

港区は三田（港区の三田とは別）一丁目の近傍にあるが、わずかに接していない。

これらの川は、呑川の一部と目黒川のみが地表を流れており、他は支流の羅漢寺川なども含めて区内では暗渠にされている[3]。

歴史
原始、古墳時代
東山貝塚遺跡：23区内の3大貝塚の一つ。旧石器時代から古墳時代の遺跡が重層的に発見されており、氷期、縄文海進期、古代海退期と超長期的に利用された場所である。縄文時代の遺跡は区内に数多い。
古代
武蔵国荏原郡に属す。9世紀ごろ大鳥神社、目黒不動、法眼寺が建てられる。横山党目黒氏の荘園「菅刈荘」であったと伝えられる（目黒高校近辺が居館であったという伝承がある）。
中世
区内に鎌倉道幹線が整備された。後北条氏勢力下となってからは、吉良氏の所領となった。
近世
江戸時代には孟宗竹の産地であり、現在の目黒区南部、品川区境で採れる筍は名産品であった。
近・現代


1874年 八雲小学校設置。

1896年 ビール工場開場。

1907年 目黒競馬場開設。

1927年 東急東横線開通。

1933年 目黒競馬場廃止。

1994年 防衛庁移転計画に基づき統合幕僚学校・三自衛隊の幹部学校が移駐、目黒駐屯地として開設。

2003年 - 目黒区ポイ捨てなどのないまちをみんなでつくる条例制定。

区の沿革


1867年 武蔵知県事管轄地となる。

1869年 品川県の一部となる。

1871年 東京府の一部となる。

1889年5月1日 荏原郡三田村、上目黒村、中目黒村、下目黒村が目黒村に、碑文谷村、衾村が碑衾村になる。

1922年12月1日 荏原郡目黒村が荏原郡目黒町になる。

1927年4月1日 荏原郡碑衾村が荏原郡碑衾町になる。

1932年10月1日 目黒町と碑衾町が東京市に編入、2町の区域をもって東京市目黒区となる。
