盛岡市（もりおかし）は、岩手県中部に位置する市。岩手県の県庁所在地及び最大の都市で、中核市、保健所政令市、中枢中核都市に指定されている[1][2]。1889年（明治22年）市制施行。
概要盛岡市の岩山から市街地を展望

平安時代、桓武天皇の命により志波城が置かれ律令制下となる。安土桃山時代に勢力を広げた南部氏が盛岡城を築いて以後、城下町として発達。明治以後は岩手県の県庁所在地となった。

岩手県内最大の都市でもあり、岩手県の政治、経済、交通の中心都市でもある。周辺ベッドタウンを含めた盛岡都市圏としての人口は約47万人であり、県内及び北東北の経済・文化をリードするポジションにある。

岩手県の内陸部、北上盆地のほぼ中央部に位置し、市内中心部で主流北上川に雫石川、中津川が合流する。中心市街地からは奥羽山脈に属する岩手山（北西）、駒ケ岳（西）北上高地に属する早池峰山（東）のほか、独立峰の姫神山（北）、南昌山・東根山（南）などを望み、これらは市域の内外にありながら総じて街のランドマークとなっている。市域面積は東京23区の約1.4倍に相当し、豊かな自然環境に恵まれ美しい景観を形成している。

国土地理院によると盛岡市の東西南北それぞれの端は以下の位置[4][5]。東端は早坂峠の南南東約4.2キロメートル (km) 、西端は御所湖畔、南端は毛無森、北端は送仙山である。[6]。
