甲斐国（かいのくに）は、かつて日本の地方行政区分だった令制国の一つ。東海道に属し、現在の山梨県に相当する。

7世紀に成立した。律令制下では東海道に属し、駿河国から甲斐国に通じる支線があった。国名の語源は不明であるが、本居宣長は『古事記伝』において、甲斐国出身の門弟で後に甲斐地誌『甲斐名勝志』を著している萩原元克の説に従い、山の峡（カヒ＝間）、つまり山々間に由来するという説をあげている。
近代には橋本進吉が『上代特殊仮名遣』において峡説を否定したことから新たな解釈が求められ、近年は平川南が古代甲斐国が官道である東海道と東山道の連結的に位置することから、行政・交通上の「交ひ」であったことに由来するという新説を提唱している[1]。 日本列島における東西の政権にとって最前線と位置付けられることが多い。考古学的には4世紀後半に甲府盆地南縁に東海地方経由で畿内色の影響を受けた甲斐国造墓と見られる甲斐銚子塚古墳を代表とする大型古墳が立地しており、中央のヤマト王権の東国における進出拠点になっている。古代には支配の中心地が盆地東部の東郡地域へ移る。神護景雲2年（762年）に全国から9人の善行の人が選ばれ孝養を受賞理由にして税を免ぜられた者の中に八代郡の小谷直五百依 平安時代には出土文字資料
歴史
平安時代
室町時代には鎌倉府の影響下にあったが、上杉禅秀の乱を契機に守護武田氏が没落し、争乱状態となる。 戦国時代には武田氏が国人勢力を征圧して戦国大名化し、信虎・晴信（信玄）・勝頼の三代期には拡大領国における本国となり、信虎期に開創された甲府が城下町として整備され、政治的・経済的中心地となる。 織田・徳川勢力による武田氏滅亡後は領主変遷が激しく、織田信長の家臣河尻秀隆らによる一時的な統治、信長が横死した本能寺の変後の政治的空白では徳川氏・北条氏が武田遺領を巡り天正壬午の乱が発生する。豊臣政権時代には関東8か国を領した徳川家康に備えた最前線となり、羽柴・加藤・浅野氏など豊臣系大名が配置された。 江戸時代には東海道や中山道とともに甲州街道が整備された。そして甲斐は江戸幕府の政治的・経済的中心地である江戸防衛の戦略正面と位置付けられ、甲府藩が成立し徳川一族や譜代大名による統治が行われた。享保年間には幕府直轄領化され甲府町方は甲府勤番による支配、在方は三分代官支配となり、幕末に至った。

近世以降の沿革
「旧高旧領取調帳」の記載によると、明治初年時点では国内の全域が幕府領であった。管轄は以下の通り。（773村・311,097石余）

慶応4年
5月 - 甲府町奉行が廃止され、甲府総町は甲府町差配の管轄となる。
5月24日（1868年7月13日） - 田安徳川家が立藩して田安藩となる。
9月4日（1868年10月19日） - 甲府代官所・石和代官所・市川代官所の管轄地がそれぞれ府中県・石和県・市川県の管轄となる。
10月28日（1868年12月11日） - 田安藩領を除く全域が甲斐府の管轄となる。
明治2年
7月20日（1869年8月27日） - 甲斐府が甲府県に改称。
12月26日（1870年1月27日） - 田安藩が廃藩となり、翌年にかけて領地が甲府県の管轄となる。
明治3年11月20日（1871年1月10日） - 甲府県が山梨県に改称。
