珊瑚海海戦

珊瑚海海戦（さんごかいかいせん、英語: Battle of the Coral Sea）は、太平洋戦争中の1942年（昭和17年）5月上旬、MO作戦中に日本海軍と連合国（アメリカ合衆国・オーストラリア）軍の間で発生した戦闘[2]。ポートモレスビー攻略を目指して珊瑚海に進出する日本軍の計画を、暗号解読によって知った連合国軍が先に進出し[3][4]、艦上機で日本の攻略部隊を空襲したため、日本海軍が空母部隊で敵空母を捕捉しようとして発生した[5]。5月8日の戦闘では、米空母2隻（レキシントン、ヨークタウン）と日本海軍の空母2隻（瑞鶴、翔鶴）が攻撃を交わした[6]。この海戦は対抗する両艦隊が互いに相手の艦を視界内に入れずに行われた、歴史上最初の海戦となった[7]。
背景
MO作戦まで

1941年（昭和16年）9月、太平洋戦争開戦前におこなわれた連合艦隊の図上演習において、中部太平洋のカロリン諸島トラック泊地を根拠地とする日本海軍の第四艦隊（司令長官井上成美中将）は、「ラバウル攻略後はラエやサラモアなどニューギニア島東部へ進出すべし」と主張した[8]。
