熊本市（くまもとし）は、熊本県の県庁所在地かつ人口が最多の市。政令指定都市の一つで西区、北区、中央区、東区、南区の5つの行政区が設置されている。 日本三名城・熊本城（2005年）熊本城（写真右上）からの眺望が保たれるように建物の高さ制限がなされている（2011年）中心部のアーケード街（下通商店街）開発が進む「熊本駅周辺」（2021年）

熊本県の総面積の5.3%にあたる約390km2の市域に、県内人口の約43.3%にあたる約74万人の市民が住んでいるプライメイトシティであり、政令指定都市において県に占める人口の割合は京都市、仙台市、広島市に次いで4番目に高い。九州では、福岡市、北九州市に次いで3番目に人口が多い。2012年4月1日に九州で3番目の政令指定都市に移行した。2020年現在、政令指定都市に移行した都市としては最も新しい市となっている[注 1]。なお、熊本市は日本最南端の政令指定都市でもある。
肥後国府や肥後国分寺が置かれた地である。中心市街地は細川氏の熊本藩54万石の城下町を基礎に発展してきた。戦前は熊本鎮台や陸軍第6師団、国の出先機関が置かれ、九州を代表する軍都・行政都市として栄えた。2011年3月12日、九州新幹線（博多駅 - 鹿児島中央駅）が全線開通し、熊本駅に新幹線駅が併設された。21世紀に入ってからは、熊本駅周辺や中心市街地で大規模な再開発事業が相次いで進行している。
