満洲事変（まんしゅうじへん、.mw-parser-output .lang-ja-serif{font-family:YuMincho,"Yu Mincho","ヒラギノ明朝","Noto Serif JP","Noto Sans CJK JP",serif}.mw-parser-output .lang-ja-sans{font-family:YuGothic,"Yu Gothic","ヒラギノ角ゴ","Noto Sans CJK JP",sans-serif}旧字体：滿洲事變、英語: Mukden incident）は、1931年（昭和6年、民国20年）9月18日に中華民国遼寧省瀋陽市郊外の柳条湖で、関東軍[注釈 1]がポーツマス条約により日本に譲渡された南満洲鉄道の線路を爆破した事件 (柳条湖事件[注釈 2]）に端を発し、関東軍による満洲（中国東北部）全土の占領を経て、1933年（昭和8年）5月31日の塘沽協定成立に至る、日本と中華民国との間の武力紛争（事変）のこと。中国側の呼称は九一八事変[注釈 3]。関東軍は約6か月で満洲全土を占領した。 中国は清朝時代の1902年の英清通商航海条約

条約無効問題と国権回復運動
しかし、1909年に間島協約が締結され、日本側は、清側の間島領有権・警察権を認める代わりに、朝鮮人の土地所有権や満洲と朝鮮半島を鉄道で結ぶ権利などを獲得した。これに伴い、1909年11月に在間島日本総領事館が設置されたが、翌年に日韓併合が行われたため、日本と清は間島をもって国境で隣接することとなった。1911年、辛亥革命によって清が倒れ中華民国が成立したが、日清間の諸条約は当時の国際慣習法および学説上、中華民国に引き継がれるとされていたが（国家承継における包括承継理論）、明確な形で新国家（中華民国）と条約の締約・承認は行われない状況が継続していた。
日本は1914年から始まった第一次世界大戦に参戦しドイツに対して膠州湾租借地（現：山東省青島市）の中国への返還を求めたが、この際に袁世凱大統領に対し旧清朝と締約していた過去の満蒙権益に関する条約の延長、および山東省のドイツ権益に関する要求をおこない（1915年（大正4年）のいわゆる対華21ヶ条要求）、その結果山東省に関する条約や満洲における日本人の土地に関する権利を約束した南満東蒙条約など２条約１３交換公文が締結された。しかし日本側が南満東蒙条約は当時の国際法で日本人とされていた間島の朝鮮人にも適用されると主張したところ、これを間島協約の合意を無視するものであるとする中国側は反発し、中国は山東条項が設けられたヴェルサイユ条約（1919年）への署名も拒絶した。1919年には朝鮮三・一運動が発生しており日韓併合に反対する元義兵などの朝鮮人亡命者が間島を拠点として独立運動を展開しており、1920年には日本政府は間島への出兵を行った。
中華民国?介石派は1919年7月のカラハン宣言以降、急速に共産主義勢力に接近し、国家継承における条約継承否定説を採用し、日本との過去の条約（日清間の諸条約）の無効を主張し始めた。特に、北伐に着手中の1928年7月19日に日清通商航海条約の破毀を一方的に宣言し、これに対して日本政府はその宣言の無効を主張した。
また、1915年に対日制裁として発布された懲弁国賊条例は、対華21ヶ条要求交渉で締約した2条約13公文に完全に違背する条例であったが、1929年（昭和4年）に強化され「土地盗売厳禁条例」「商租禁止令」など、およそ59の追加法令となり、日本人に対する土地・家屋の商租禁止と従前に貸借している土地・家屋の回収が図られた[1]。間島や満洲各地の朝鮮系を中心とした日本人居住者は立ち退きを強要され、あるいは迫害された。
