浜松市（はままつし）は、静岡県の西部、遠州地方にある県内で最多の人口を有する都市。政令指定都市と国際会議観光都市に指定されている。国土縮図型都市と称されることがある。
概要

県庁所在地である静岡市を上回る人口を持ち、川崎市（神奈川県）、北九州市（福岡県）、堺市（大阪府）に次ぐ県庁所在地以外の市で4番目の人口を有する。静岡市とともに北九州・福岡大都市圏に次ぐ、全国5位の規模を有する静岡・浜松大都市圏の中心都市として機能している。面積は静岡県内最大である。

平成の大合併以前の旧浜松市の人口は約61万人、人口密度2368人/?[1]であり、旧浜北市との小規模合併のみで政令市移行の基準[注釈 1]を満たしていたが、財政が逼迫した北遠自治体等との大規模救済合併[2]により、静岡県では静岡市に次いで2番目の政令指定都市に移行した。ピーク時には81万人であったが、現在は80万人を割り込み79万人と減少傾向が続いている。全国の市町村で2番目の面積で3つの行政区を持ち、面積の約6割を天竜区が、人口の97％以上を天竜区を除いた2区が占めている[3]。湖西市にまたがって存在する浜名湖は、湖としては日本で10番目の大きさを持つ。

遠州地域（静岡県西部）における経済・文化・観光の中心となっており、浜松市を中心とする浜松都市圏は、都道府県庁所在地以外の都市圏で2番目の人口を有する[4]。また愛知県の東三河、長野県の南信州地域との結びつきも強く、これらの地域を総称し三遠南信と呼ばれる[5][6]。

ホンダの発祥地であり、スズキが本社を構えるなど全国でも有数の自動車工業都市であり、東海工業地域の中心的地域である。また、ヤマハやカワイ、ローランドや鈴木楽器製作所といった多数の楽器メーカーが立地する「楽器の街」として知られ、「楽都」とも称される[7]。また、音楽文化活動も盛んでユネスコの創造都市ネットワークに音楽分野で加盟している[7]。
