中心市街地の一つである橋北地区の街並み三重県庁

津市（つし）は、三重県の県庁所在地であり、中勢地域に位置する市。

津市は伊勢平野のほぼ中心部にあり、海沿いに市街地がある臨海都市でもある。人口は四日市市に次いで県内第2位で、面積は県内最大である。都市雇用圏の人口は約50万人。日本で最初に市制施行した31市の中の一つであり、中枢中核都市、計量特定市に指定されている。
概要

江戸時代には、藤堂家が治める津藩の城下町として栄えた。旧津市は日本で最初（1889年〈明治22年〉4月1日）に市制施行した31市の1つで、この時点で市制施行をしたのは東海3県（愛知県、岐阜県、三重県）では津市のみである。三重県内の官公庁や国の出先機関、文教施設が集約されており、三重県の行政・文教の中心地となっている。また、周辺自治体と共に人口50万人の津都市圏を形成し[1]、広義での中京圏に属している[2]。

日本三大観音の一つである津観音や、建造物としては三重県で初めて国宝に指定された真宗高田派専修寺がある。また津駅前にある地上18階地下1階の高層複合ビル「アスト津」は、津市のランドマークとなっている。

現在、日本で唯一の読みがなが1文字である自治体でもある。
