法務大臣（ほうむだいじん、英語: Minister of Justice）は、日本の法務省の長および主任の大臣たる国務大臣[2][3]。略称は法相（ほうしょう）である。
概説

戦後、法務大臣経験者で内閣総理大臣に就任した人物は皆無である。閣僚名簿では首相、副総理、総務大臣の次に並べられ、席次もそのようになる。中央省庁再編前は、首相、副総理の次位であった。閣内の重石として後藤田正晴、鳩山邦夫、江田五月、谷垣禎一など重鎮クラスの就任例もある。

英米法や大陸法の諸国において法務大臣は政府の法解釈助言者という位置づけであり、法曹資格者が就任することが多いのに対し、日本では、政府の法解釈答弁は内閣法制局長官が担当している。
