江別市（えべつし）は、北海道中部（道央地方）にある石狩振興局の市。
概要

石狩振興局では札幌市に次ぐ第二位の人口規模の都市であり、札幌市中心部までは車で約40分（一般道路利用）、札幌駅から野幌駅まで約20分と交通アクセスが良く、札幌のベッドタウンとして人口が増加した[1][2]。また、新千歳空港まで車や鉄道で約1時間の距離に位置しており[2]、市内の東西2箇所に高速道路のインターチェンジがあるなど北海道内各地へもアクセスし易い環境にある[1]。

1891年（明治24年）に煉瓦の製造が始まっており、窯業の歴史がある[3]。現在でも煉瓦の一大産地になっており、「江別のれんが」として「北海道遺産」[4]、「江別市の煉瓦建造物」「江別市の煉瓦の関連遺産」として「近代化産業遺産」に認定されているほか[5]、市内には煉瓦を使用した施設が現存している[6]。また、食に関する試験研究機関や大学が集積しており、札幌市などとともに「総合特別区域法」に基づく特区「北海道フード・コンプレックス国際戦略総合特区 」（フード特区）に指定されている[7][8]。
市名の由来

アイヌ語からの転訛に由来しているが、諸説ある[9]。

アイヌ語意味由来
カタカナ表記（アコ?イタ?）ラテン翻字
イエ・ペッye-pet膿汁の川「膿のように濁った川」を意味する[10]。
イペ・オッipe-ot魚がたくさんいる
イ・プッi-putそれの入り口大事なところへの入り口[11][12]。当時の文化の中心地であった千歳への入口を意味するとされている[9]。
エ・ペッケe-petke顔が裂けている幕末にこの地を訪れた松浦武四郎が記録した民間語源[9][13][14]。
ウサギの顔のように3つに分かれている所を意味する。アイヌ語では通常ウサギのことを「イセポ」（isepo）と呼ぶが、これを畑で用いるとウサギが作物を荒らすとされるため、畑では忌み言葉として「エペッケ」が用いられる。
ユペ・オッyupe-otチョウザメがたくさんいる永田方正による[9][15][11]。
