水戸市（みとし）は、茨城県の県央地域に位置する市。茨城県の県庁所在地で、中核市、保健所政令市、中枢中核都市に指定されている。1889年（明治22年）市制施行。
概要水戸市中心部周辺の空中写真。市街地北方から東方へ那珂川が流れ、市街地西方に千波湖や偕楽園がある。2022年4月8日撮影の70枚を合成作成。国土交通省 国土地理院 地図・空中写真閲覧サービスの空中写真を基に作成。

御三家の一つ水戸徳川家所縁の地であり、水戸黄門（徳川光圀）や偕楽園が知られている。毎年2月には水戸の梅まつりが、8月には水戸黄門まつり、9月には水戸萩まつりが開催される。明治時代以降は納豆（水戸納豆）の生産が盛んになった。

中心部を含む市域の大部分は旧茨城郡（1878年〈明治11年〉より東茨城郡）であり、茨城県の名称は県庁が茨城郡水戸に置かれたことに由来する。市域の一部に旧那珂郡域を含む。
地理

関東平野の東側に位置し、茨城県の県央地域に区分される。
地形

那珂川の周辺は低地となっているが、それ以外は台地が広がっている。日本初の水道専用ダムの楮川ダムがある。

気候

太平洋側気候の三陸・常磐型と東海・関東型の中間的な気候である。夏はオホーツク海気団からの北東気流の影響で最高気温は低めで、真夏日日数は38.0日と関東甲信越以西の県庁所在地では最も少なく、山形市より少ない。猛暑日になることもあまり無い。また、熱帯夜もほとんどない。

冬は晴天が続き、最高気温は関東以西の平均的な値で日中は暖かいが、大平野の中の都市のため放射冷却現象が強くなり易く、朝晩は冷え込みが厳しい。冬季の平均最低気温は東北南部の仙台市や福島市より低い。
