本能寺の変（ほんのうじのへん）は、天正10年6月2日（1582年6月21日）早朝、明智光秀が謀反を起こし、京都本能寺に滞在する主君・織田信長を襲撃した事件である[12]。

信長は寝込みを襲われ、包囲されたことを悟ると、寺に火を放ち、自害して果てた[12]。信長の嫡男で織田家当主の信忠も襲われ、宿泊していた妙覚寺から二条御新造に移って抗戦したが、やはり建物に火を放って自害した[13]。
