『月と六ペンス』（つきとろくペンス、The Moon and Sixpence）は、1919年に出版されたサマセット・モームの小説。画家のポール・ゴーギャンをモデルに、絵を描くために安定した生活を捨て、死後に名声を得た人物の生涯を、友人の一人称という視点で書かれている。この小説を書くにあたり、モームは実際にタヒチへ赴き、ゴーギャンの絵が描かれたガラスパネルを手に入れたという。
あらすじ

作家である私は、ストリックランド夫人のパーティーに招かれたことからチャールズ・ストリックランドと知り合う。ストリックランドはイギリスの証券会社で働いていたが、ある日突然家族を残して消えてしまう。私は夫人に頼まれ、ストリックランドがいるというパリへ向う。私がストリックランドのもとへ向かうと、駆け落ちしたといわれていた女性の姿はなく、一人で貧しい生活を送っていた。話を聞くと絵を描くために生活を捨てたという。私は彼を批判するが、彼はそれをものともしない。夫人は私からそのことを聞くと悲しんだが、やがてタイピストの仕事を始めて自立していった。

それから5年後、私はパリで暮らしていた。以前にローマで知り合った三流画家のダーク・ストルーヴのもとを訪れ、彼がストリックランドの才能に惚れ込んでいることを知る。ストルーヴに連れられストリックランドと再会するが、彼は相変らず貧しい暮らしをしていた。それから私は何度かストリックランドと会ったが、その後絶縁状態になっていた。クリスマスを前にしたある日、ストルーヴとともにストリックランドのアトリエを訪れると、彼は重病を患っていた。ストルーヴが彼を自分の家に引き取ろうとすると、妻のブランチは強く反対した。夫に説得されてストリックランドの看病をするうちにブランチは彼に好意を寄せるようになり、ついには夫を棄ててストリックランドに付き添うが、愛情を受け入れてもらえなかったために服毒自殺してしまう。妻の死を知ったストルーヴは、ストリックランドへの敬意を失うことなく、故郷のオランダへと帰って行った。私はストリックランドに会って彼を再び批判した。その後私が彼と再会することはなかった。我々はどこから来たのか 我々は何者か 我々はどこへ行くのか

ストリックランドの死後、私は別の用事でタヒチを訪れていた。そこで彼と一緒に仕事をしていたというニコルズ船長に出会い、彼が船乗りの仕事をしていた時のことを聞く。貿易商のコーエンはストリックランドを自分の農場で働かせていたことを話す。宿屋のティアレは彼にアタという妻を斡旋したことを話した。彼の家に泊まったことのあるブリュノ船長は、ストリックランドの家の様子を話した。医師のクートラはストリックランドがハンセン病に感染した晩年のことを語り、彼の遺作は遺言によって燃やされたとしている。私はクートラ医師の所有するストリックランドの果物絵を見て恐ろしさを感じていた。

ロンドンに帰った私は彼がどのような生涯を過ごしたのかを伝えようとストリックランド夫人に再会する。タヒチでのストリックランドのことを話し終えた私の頭には、彼がアタとの間に儲けた息子が、大海原で船を操っている姿が浮かんでいた。
タイトルについて

旧・新潮文庫（初版1959年）版の中野好夫の訳者解説では、タイトルの「月」は夢を、「六ペンス」は現実を意味するとされる。
新訳・新潮文庫（初版2014年）版の金原瑞人の訳者解説では、「「(満)月」は夜空に輝く美を、「六ペンス(玉)」は世俗の安っぽさを象徴しているのかもしれないし、「月」は狂気、「六ペンス」は日常を象徴しているのかもしれない」と[1]述べている。
ゴーギャンとの相違点

ストリックランドはイギリス人として描かれているが、ポール・ゴーギャンはフランス人である。また作中でストリックランドは同世代の画家を知らないだろうとしているが、ゴーギャンはゴッホと交流があった。しかし見方によっては、ストルーヴがゴッホをモデルにしていると考えることも出来よう（ストルーヴはゴッホ同様、オランダ人である）。ストリックランドは印象派を全く評価しておらず、他の画家との交流もほとんどせずほぼ制作することにしか興味を持っていなかった。ゴーギャンは印象派展に作品を出展しており、多数の印象派画家と交流するなど活発に活動していた点も大きな相違点だろう。

さらにいえば、ストリックランドがタヒチで亡くなっているのに対し、ゴーギャンはマルキーズ諸島で亡くなっているなど、ほかにも数多くの相違が見られる。ただし、画家になる前は証券会社で働いているなど、共通点があるのも確かである。
映画・舞台・テレビドラマ化

1942年に、アルバート・レウィン監督、ジョージ・サンダース主演による映画が公開された。

1958年にはオペラ「月と6ペンス」が、ジョン・ガードナー作曲で、ロンドンコヴェント・ガーデンにあるロイヤル・オペラ・ハウスで上演された。

1959年には、ロバート・マリガン演出、ローレンス・オリヴィエ主演によるテレビドラマがNBCで放送された。オリヴィエはこれがテレビ初出演となった。

日本語訳

『月と六ペンス』最初の訳書は、1940年に中野好夫訳で、中央公論社〈現代世界文学叢書〉で刊行。
戦後は新潮社「モーム全集」、新潮文庫が刊行、多数重版した。2014年に新潮版は、中野訳から金原瑞人訳に変わった[2]。

他に、厨川圭子、阿部知二、龍口直太郎、北川悌二、大岡玲訳が刊行。

現行版（21世紀刊行）は、新潮文庫・金原訳、行方昭夫訳の岩波文庫と、土屋政雄訳の光文社古典新訳文庫がある。
