書写（しょしゃ）とは、文字を書き取ること。学校教育における教科や単元の呼称としても用いられる。 学校教育においては「文字を正しく整えて書くこと」が目的であり、毛筆は「硬筆による書写の能力の基礎を養うよう指導」し、硬筆は「毛筆との関連を図りながら，特に取り上げて指導するよう配慮すること」とされている[1]。^ 引用は学習指導要領より。 学校教育において、小学校、中学校、中等教育学校の前期課程などで、国語の言語事項（授業の一部）として行われる。人間の言語文化は主に言葉と文字によって形成されているが、文字がなければ新しい言葉を作る造語能力も無く（文化創造力の欠如）、特に東洋の漢字文化においては、言葉が漢字と密接に関係していることから、義務教育である小・中学校では国語の言語事項に位置づけられている[要出典]。 戦後、修身教育と同様、柔道・剣道・華道など“道”の付くものは国粋主義の象徴であると排除され、硬筆の習字のみが認められていたが、1951年に地方からの強い要望から、毛筆の習字も国語の一部として学習指導要領に盛り込まれた[1]。1971年に「書写」は小学校での必修科目となった[2][3]。 書写を習字（しゅうじ、「てならい」とも読む）ということがあるが、これは終戦直後までは「習字」が正式な呼び方の時期であったことの名残りであり、正確な呼び方ではない[要出典]。 なお、高等学校や中等教育学校の後期課程では「書写」ではなく、芸術科に設けられている科目「書道」（書道I、書道II、書道III）に対応する形になっている。書写が文字の教育（リテラシーの一種）であるのに対し、書道は芸術教育であり、両者は目的が全く異なる。そのため、一部には両者の関連性の欠如が問題として指摘されている[誰?]。 最近では生涯学習としての書道が脚光を浴びていることもあり、書写の生涯学習としての捉え方も注目されている。ちなみに生涯学習とは「定年後の学習活動」のことではなく、一生涯に渡って学習するという意味であるが、全国民が幼い頃から学習している書写の毛筆・硬筆は、定年後に限らず人生のいつでも書道として気軽に始めやすく、文字を書くという行為が生活と密接につながっていることから続けやすいという長所がある。
