旭川市（あさひかわし）は、北海道北中部（道北地方）に位置し、上川総合振興局に属する市。上川盆地に広がっている。振興局所在地であり、札幌市に次ぐ北海道第2位の人口（約32万人）を有する中核市である[1]。

北海道中央部に位置し、道北の経済・産業・文化の中心都市[2]。ユネスコの「デザイン都市」、そして「国際会議観光都市」に認定されている[3]。交通面では国道や鉄道路線の終起点となり高速道路が整備されているなど道内物流の拠点となっており[2]、旭川空港からは東京・名古屋・大阪などへ直行便が就航している[2]。全国的に知名度の高い旭川市旭山動物園が存在し、年間500万人以上の観光入込客数があることから、札幌市・小樽市・函館市と並ぶ北海道の観光都市として知名度が高い都市である[4]。北海道パウダーベルトに位置し、冬季はカムイスキーリンクスを中心としたスキーリゾート観光もメインとなっている[5]。また、旭川にゆかりのある文学者や芸術家も多く[6]、市内各所に野外彫刻作品が置かれているほか（旭川の野外彫刻）[6][7]、旭川家具をはじめとした木工業が盛んである[注 1][9]。 一般に、旭川の名が初めて登場したのは明治23年9月20日の開村告知の時[10][注 2]とされているが、実際にはその7か月ほど前の明治23年2月9日付『北海道毎日新聞』に掲載された以下の記事がある[11][注 3]。
