東郷平八郎（1907年〈明治40年〉）ジノヴィー・ロジェストヴェンスキー

日本海海戦（にほんかいかいせん）は、日露戦争中の1905年（明治38年）5月27日から5月28日にかけて、大日本帝国海軍の連合艦隊とロシア帝国海軍が極東へ送った第2・第3太平洋艦隊によって日本海で行われた海戦である。

主力決戦は対馬東方沖海域で行われた。日本以外の国々では、この海戦を対馬沖海戦と呼ぶ（ロシア語「Цусимское сражение」、英語「Battle of Tsushima」）。

第2・第3太平洋艦隊はロシアのバルト海艦隊（バルチック艦隊）から引き抜かれて編成されたものであるため、日本ではこの艦隊を「バルチック艦隊」と呼ぶ事が通例となっている。本稿でもこの呼称を用いる。

ウラジオストク港を目指し対馬海峡を突破しようとしたバルチック艦隊を連合艦隊が邀撃する形となり、バルチック艦隊は艦艇のほぼ全てを損失した一方で[注釈 5]、連合艦隊の被害は小艦艇数隻のみの喪失に留まり、連合艦隊は海戦史上稀に見る勝利を収めた。海戦の背景・遠因は朝鮮半島周辺の制海権を争ったことにある。

海戦の結果、ロシアは戦争の形勢逆転の最後の手段も無くなり、拒否していた日本との講和交渉を受け入れることとなった。
背景

日露戦争開戦前、日露両国は海軍の増強に努めており、日本側がやや先行し主力艦として戦艦6隻、装甲巡洋艦6隻（旧式艦除く）を1902年（明治35年）に揃えた。ロシア側は1905年（明治38年）初めごろを目途に旅順とウラジオストク[注釈 6]の太平洋艦隊へ戦艦12隻、装甲巡洋艦4隻（旧式艦除く）を揃え日本側を圧倒しようと意図した。このことは日本側の開戦を決断する要素の一つになった。

1904年（明治37年）2月の開戦時点では、日本側は上記に加え、アルゼンチンより購入した装甲巡洋艦「春日」と「日進」もシンガポールまで回航していた。対して、ロシア側は戦艦「オスリャービャ」を本国（バルト海）から派遣途中だったがまだインド洋にいた。
