日本における警察官（にほんにおけるけいさつかん）とは、警察法の定めにより警察庁、都道府県警察に置かれる公安職の警察職員をいう（警察法第34条第1項、第55条第1項）。警察官は、個人の生命、身体及び財産の保護、犯罪の予防、公安の維持並びに他の法令の執行等の職権職務を忠実に遂行すること等を任務とする（警察官職務執行法第1条第1項、第8条）。旧警察法においては、公安職の警察職員のうち国家公務員である者を「警察官」、地方公務員である者を「警察吏員」と呼び区別していたが、現警察法においては「警察官」の名称に統一されている。なお、都道府県警察の警察官のうち警視正以上の者は国家公務員とされ「地方警務官」と呼ぶのに対し、それ以外の警察官その他の職員は「地方警察職員」と総称される（警察法第56条第1項、第2項）。

法令上、警察官は主に下記のような権限を有している[1]。

職務質問をする権限（警察官職務執行法第2条第1項）

武器を使用する権限（警察官職務執行法第7条）

被疑者への出頭要請及び取調権（刑事訴訟法第198条）

逮捕権（刑事訴訟法第199条）

犯罪捜査のための捜索・差押・検証（刑事訴訟法第218条）等

緊急自動車の優先通行権（道路交通法第39条等）

特定区域への通行制限権（道路交通法第6条第4項）

災害時の通行禁止区域における車両その他の物件の移動命令や破損の権限（災害対策基本法第76条の3）
