新居浜市（にいはまし）は、愛媛県の東部に位置する市。瀬戸内海に面し、東予地方の中心都市の一つで計量特定市の指定都市。新居浜平野一帯を指す都市圏人口は愛媛県で第二の規模となる約23万人を有し、瀬戸内工業地域に属する臨海工業都市でもある。
概要

瀬戸内有数の工業都市。江戸時代に住友家によって開坑された別子銅山（住友金属鉱山）で繁栄の足がかりを築き、住友財閥発展の礎となった。その後、産業機械・化学工業・非鉄金属など住友グループとその協力企業群により発展を遂げた。住友グループの企業城下町として有名であり、よく「工都・新居浜」と表現される。住友金属鉱山・住友化学・住友重機械工業・住友林業の各社は、住友グループの中では「新居浜4社」とも呼ばれている。

平成の大合併により県内人口第2位の座を今治市に譲ったものの、現在も人口密度では東予地方第1位であり東予地方の中心都市のひとつでもある。

毎年10月に行われる新居浜太鼓祭りは勇壮な山車が市内を練り歩く祭りであり、四国三大祭りや日本三大喧嘩祭りの一つとしても知られている。

その他にも日本三大銅山の一つでもある別子銅山関連の近代化産業遺産群、世界2位の規模を誇るプラネタリウム（愛媛県総合科学博物館）も知られている。

位置

新居浜市は四国地方のほぼ中北部に位置し、東は四国中央市、西は西条市と接する。北は瀬戸内海の燧灘（ひうちなだ）に面し、南は四国山地を境として高知県と境を接している。

北は瀬戸内海の最奥の燧灘に面する。市域の北半分には新居浜平野が広がり、市街地が形成されている。新居浜平野の南縁では中央構造線に沿うように千数百メートル級の急峻な四国山地がそびえる。

市街地の中心を流れる国領川の西側を川西地区、東側は川東地区、東西の丘陵地及びそれらを結ぶ線を通る予讃線付近から南側は上部地区と呼ばれる。

南方奥地には別子山地区が位置する。山深くに位置するこの地区は、市街地からは約30km離れている。冠山を源とし、旧別子銅山を流れていた銅山川が、法皇山脈の合間を東進する。なお、この別子山地区は独立した村「別子山村」であったが、2003年（平成15年）に新居浜市に編入合併された。
