弁護士（べんごし）は、依頼を受けて法律事務を処理することを職務とする専門職である。

裁判官や検察官に対して、「在野法曹」と呼ばれる。
歴史
西欧における弁護士の歴史古代ローマのキケロー

現在の弁護士制度は、西ヨーロッパにおいて発達したものに由来する。その起源は、古代ギリシャの「雄弁家（orators）」や古代ローマの「advocates、jurisconsults (iuris consulti)」にまでさかのぼるとされている。例えば古代ローマのキケロは弁護士（法律家）として活動をしていた（某裁判で弁護を行い勝訴し名を知られ、後に文筆家、哲学者、政治家として有名になった。古代ローマにおける私法上の裁判（のしくみ）については、en:Centumviral courtも参照のこと。）フランドルの画家クエンティン・マサイスによる、ある男の肖像（16世紀の絵画。スコットランド国立ギャラリー所蔵。）

近代までにヨーロッパ各国の地域及び担当する裁判所の種類によって様々な名称があり、また、英国法においては代理を行う者（代訴人や事務弁護士）と弁論を行う者（代言人や法廷弁護士）が区別されており、同国法を継受した諸現在でもそのような区別が残っていることがある。
