嵐（あらし、英: ARASHI[1]）は、日本の男性アイドルグループ[6]。所属事務所は株式会社嵐で、STARTO ENTERTAINMENTとエージェント契約を結んでいる[7][8]。所属レコード会社はストームレーベルズ[9]。2020年12月31日をもってグループとしての活動を休止した[5][10]。
概説
結成：1999年

1999年（平成11年）9月15日にハワイ州・ホノルル沖のクルーズ客船でデビュー記者会見を行い、11月3日デビューシングル「A・RA・SHI」をリリースしCDデビュー[11][12]。

1999年の夏前から松本、二宮、櫻井はレコーディングや振り付けを行っていたが、CDデビューすることは知らされていなかった[13]。

大野はそれまでに二度、事務所に「辞意」を伝えており、レコーディングは「手伝ってほしい」と言われて参加、「ハワイへ行くのは手伝いのご褒美だ」と思い込んでいた[14]。

櫻井は当時、嵐を一時的な活動グループと考えており、また海外留学を検討していたため、「『1999年ワールドカップバレーボール』のイメージキャラクターとしての仕事が終われば嵐は解散する」と思い加入を引き受けたという[15]。

相葉は渡航3日前になって当時社長のジャニー喜多川から「YOU、パスポート持ってる?」の質問に「あります」と答えたところ「一緒にハワイに行こう」と言われ、「何も知らずに行ったら自分も嵐になっていた」とのこと[16]。

相葉以外のメンバーは、デビュー曲にもともと予定されていた「REACH OUT FOR MY DREAM」という曲と「夢はSOSO」という曲のレコーディングを行っていた。デビュー曲「A・RA・SHI」は、その2曲を1曲にまとめたものである[17]。
グループ名について

グループ名は、「世界中に嵐を巻き起こす」という意味や、五十音順で最初の「あ」、アルファベット順でも最初の「A」で始まることから、「頂点に立つ」という意味[17] の他に、1文字であればどんな番組に出ても必ず番組表に載ること[18] から、当時のジャニーズ事務所社長のジャニー喜多川が名付けた[19]。
