岡山県（おかやまけん）は、日本の中国地方に位置する県。県庁所在地は岡山市。
概要

県庁所在地の岡山市は2009年（平成21年）4月1日、全国で18番目の政令指定都市に移行した。山陽本線、山陽新幹線、中国自動車道、1997年（平成9年）全線開通した山陽自動車道をはじめとして西日本の交通の大動脈が県を横断している。本州と四国を結ぶ瀬戸大橋も1988年（昭和63年）に開通した。

古代、沿岸域から内陸地域にかけては「吉備国」として、現在の広島県東部に位置する備後地方や香川県島嶼部などと併せて大和朝廷に並ぶほどの勢力を持っていた。江戸時代初期には岡山に池田氏、津山に森氏が外様大名として入封し、城下町を形成した。特に池田綱政は日本三名園の後楽園を造成し、閑谷学校を開くなど、文化・教育面に多大な功績を残した。笠岡、井原は徳川家康の従兄弟で有力譜代大名の水野勝成氏の領地となり広大な新田開発が行われたほか、灌漑事業、産業育成により地勢が大きく変貌した。倉敷には寛永19年（1642年）に代官所が置かれ、江戸幕府直轄の物資集積地として船舶輸送中継も担う天領として発展した。

県内を南北に流れる3つの一級河川（高梁川・旭川・吉井川）による潤沢な水源、温暖で長い日照時間、江戸時代から昭和戦後期にかけて瀬戸内海の大規模な干拓で広い農地[1]が形成されたことから、水稲や麦、果樹の生産が盛んである。特に白桃、マスカット・オブ・アレキサンドリア、ピオーネなどは生産量日本一であり、品質の高さから国内外に向けて高値で出荷されている。県北の標高1,200メートルに位置する蒜山高原では、ジャージー牛の大規模な放牧が行われており、チーズ、ヨーグルト、アイスクリームなどに加工されている[2]。

県南西部の井笠地方（井原市、笠岡市など）は明治の府県統合までは、県内の大部分とは異なった歴史を持つ地域である。現在でも両市は県境を越えた広島県福山市のベッドタウンであり、通学通勤に加え日常的な買い物や通院による越境が多く見られ、県域を越えた結びつきが非常に強い。
