岡山市（おかやまし）は、岡山県の南東部に位置する都市。政令指定都市に指定されている。
岡山県の県庁所在地および東瀬戸経済圏最多の人口を有する都市であり、当市を中心とした岡山都市圏は中四国地方最大の都市雇用圏を持つ。 全国的には桃太郎の伝説と吉備団子や西大寺会陽（裸祭り）が有名である。温暖な瀬戸内の気候により育まれたマスカット・オブ・アレキサンドリア、シャインマスカット、ニューピオーネ、桃太郎ぶどう、白桃、愛宕梨（あたご梨）、鴨梨（ヤーリー）など高級フルーツの産地としても有名な都市である。中心部には岡山城や日本三名園の一つである後楽園を擁している。岡山藩池田氏の城下町として栄えた江戸時代以来、地域の中心都市として発展してきた高層ビルの立ち並ぶ中心部と、閑静な田園や中山間地域が広がる郊外部を持っている。 また古くから学都としての趣を持ち、明治期から戦前の昭和期にかけて旧制第六高等学校（中国四国地方唯一のナンバースクール、後の岡山大学）や旧制岡山医科大学（中国・四国地方で設置された初めての大学）、旧制岡山農業専門学校、岡山農業研究所、旧制岡山師範学校、旧制清心女子専門学校などが開校された。現在でも、市街地中心部に数多くの大学や専門学校が存在し、学都としての性格をより一層強めている。 中四国のクロスポイントとして、1980年代以降、瀬戸大橋の開通やJR線の四国との直通化、山陽自動車道の開通など、交通インフラが急速に整備され、岡山都市圏は周辺都市圏と共に東瀬戸経済圏最大の都市として成長してきた。岡山駅は、山陽新幹線や山陰・四国方面への特急列車が乗り入れる中国四国地方最大級のターミナル駅である。岡山都市圏の人口は、当市が人口47万人の倉敷市と隣接することから、人口118万人を擁する広島市を中心とした広島都市圏を上回る規模を誇る。 戦後一貫して人口増加しており、2005年以降、周辺4町と合併したこともあり、人口は70万人を突破した。
