山口県（やまぐちけん）は、日本の中国地方に位置する県。県庁所在地は山口市。
概要山口県政資料館（旧山口県庁舎）
本州の最西端に位置している。県土の大半は山陽地方に含まれ、県北部の北浦地区が山陰地方の西端に当たるとされる[2]。
県庁所在地は県央部の山口市だが、瀬戸内側に人口10万人から20万人台の都市が複数点在する分散型都市構造を形成しており、山口市の求心力は大きくない。県内で最大の都市は県西端の下関市で、下関市を始めとする県西部は福岡県との繋がりが密接である。一方で岩国市などの県東部は広島県との繋がりが密接である（詳細は後述）。臨海部を中心に瀬戸内工業地域が広がっており、徳山駅前の石油コンビナートなど大規模工場が多数立地している。
令制国の長門国と周防国に相当することから、防長（ぼうちょう）という別名を持つ。周防国と長門国は後に毛利氏により統治され、江戸時代には、併せて長州藩と称していたことから、長州（ちょうしゅう）と呼ばれる。幕末には吉田松陰や高杉晋作などを中心となり、薩摩藩（現在の鹿児島県）とともに倒幕運動を推し進め、明治維新の立役者となった。そのような経緯から伊藤博文、木戸孝允、井上馨などの政府要人を多数輩出した。
山口県魚に指定されているふぐは下関市の南風泊市場が日本一の市場取扱量を占めている。地元や周辺地域では、主に取扱業者を中心に縁起を担いで「ふく」と呼んでいる（下関とふく参照）。ふぐの他にも日本海側のイカやアジ、瀬戸内側のアンコウやハモなど、海産物の資源が豊富である。
山口県はインテルサットのインド洋経由の欧州向け、太平洋経由の米国向けの両方向への通信が可能な位置にあり、KDDI山口衛星通信センターが山口市にある。当センターではインテルサット・インマルサットのサービスをしているが、その他、スカパーJSATが SUPERBIRD の地上局（山口ネットワーク管制センター）、自治体衛星通信機構の地上局（山口管制局）も立地している。
