小山市（おやまし）は、栃木県南部にある市。市域は関東大都市圏に含まれている[1]。総人口数は約17万人で、県庁所在地の宇都宮市に次ぐ栃木県第2の都市である[2][3]。1954年（昭和29年）市制施行。
地理

関東平野の中北部に位置し、山や丘陵はなく、ほぼ平坦の地形のため土砂災害等の危険性は低いが、河川氾濫の危険がある。市の中央部を渡良瀬川の支流である思川（おもいがわ）が流れ、市西端には巴波川（うずまがわ）、市東端に田川、さらに東側に鬼怒川が流れる。また田川の西側を吉田用水が流れ、付近の水田を潤している。

市西部の思川流域、および市東部の吉田用水・田川・鬼怒川流域は水田地帯となっており、その間の台地部は畑作地帯及び住宅地・商業地・工業団地となっている。

東北新幹線、東北本線（宇都宮線）、両毛線及び水戸線が東西南北に走り、市中央部には南北に国道4号、東西に国道50号、市東部に新4号国道が走り、農業集散地、「陸の工業地」として県下第2の都市の地位を維持している。

また、市北部には桑地区、絹地区（旧桑絹町）があり、結城紬を産出するための地域的分業がなされていることでも著名である。

茨城県結城市との繋がりが深く、かつては現在の結城市付近とともに下総国の一部であった地区もある。 1986年（昭和61年）撮影の小山市中心部周辺の空中写真。

気候区分は太平洋岸気候関東型気候区に属す。詳細はこちらを参照のこと。夏暑く冬寒い。夏は佐野市とともに県内で暑さが厳しく、38℃ぐらいになることもある。極地は2020年8月11日の38.9℃。一方冬は最低気温-8℃ぐらいまで下がることもあり、降雪日数も年数日ある。降水量は夏多く冬場は乾燥する。夏季は夕立が頻繁に発生し、発雷日数も全国有数である。
